5G Revolution: Ericsson and Vodafone Partner for Network Transformation

Ericsson and Vodafone Forge Five-Year Network Modernization Partnership

In a significant move to revamp its network infrastructure, Vodafone has announced a strategic five-year partnership with Ericsson, one of the world’s leading telecommunications equipment vendors. The deal, valued at several billion dollars, aims to modernize Vodafone’s network footprint across several key markets, leveraging Ericsson’s high-performing programmable network solutions.

A Long-Standing Relationship Takes the Next Leap

This partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between Ericsson and Vodafone, with Ericsson becoming the sole RAN (Radio Access Network) vendor in Ireland, Netherlands, and Portugal, and a major vendor in Germany, Romania, and Egypt. The collaboration will see Vodafone deploy Ericsson’s state-of-the-art Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) radios and RAN Compute solutions, as well as 5G Advanced RAN software capabilities across its networks in these markets.

Accelerating 5G Standalone Deployment

The modernization of Vodafone’s RAN infrastructure and management will lay the foundation for widespread deployment of 5G Standalone, enabling Vodafone to offer differentiated connectivity solutions with guaranteed, performance-based characteristics for both consumer and enterprise customers. This move is expected to significantly enhance Vodafone’s network capabilities, providing faster data speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability.

AI-Powered Network Optimization and Automation

As part of the partnership, Vodafone will also deploy Ericsson’s Intelligent Automation Platform and a number of AI-powered rApps (radio Apps) to deliver automated RAN optimization, energy efficiency, and management of the multi-vendor network. Germany will be the first market to deploy the platform and rApps for Ericsson and multi-vendor RAN management, with work beginning in Q4 2025.

A New Era of Autonomous Networks

The comprehensive AI and network evolution partnership will elevate Vodafone’s infrastructure to world-class standards, taking the first steps towards autonomous networks and ensuring their networks are at the forefront of technological advancement and capable of meeting future demands.
