Santander UK to Shut 44 More Branches: The Full Breakdown

Santander UK has announced a fresh wave of branch closures, confirming that 44 more locations will shut their doors in 2026. This move follows a significant reduction last year and will leave the banking giant with 244 full-service branches across the country.

The decision places approximately 291 jobs at risk, though the bank has stated it will explore redeployment opportunities for affected staff.

Why is this happening?

Santander cited a “sizeable shift” in customer behavior as the primary driver. According to the bank’s latest data:

  • 96% of all transactions are now conducted via digital channels.
  • In-branch financial transactions have plummeted by 66% since 2019.
  • Mobile app usage has surged by 109% in the same period.

Most of these closures are scheduled for April and May 2026, with a small handful closing by early 2027.

EGeneral Information

Will my account number or sort code change?

No. Your account details, including your sort code, account number, and any direct debits or standing orders, will remain exactly the same. You do not need to take any action to “move” your account.

Why is my branch closing?

Santander reports that 96% of transactions are now digital. Since 2019, branch transactions have dropped by 66%, while mobile app usage has more than doubled. The bank is consolidating its physical presence into “full-service” hubs and digital-first locations.

When will the closures happen?

The majority of the 44 branches will close in April and May 2026. Four specific branches (Leighton Buzzard, Ormskirk, Whitehaven, and Wilmslow) are scheduled to close by the end of January 2027.

Alternative Banking Options

Where can I deposit or withdraw cash now?

  • Post Offices: You can use any of the 11,000+ Post Office branches to withdraw cash, deposit cash/cheques, and check your balance. All closing branches are located within 1.5 miles of a Post Office.
  • Banking Hubs: These are shared spaces where multiple banks offer services. A “Community Banker” from Santander will usually visit these hubs on a specific day each week.
  • Other Santander Branches: You can use any other Santander branch in the UK for full service.

What is a “Community Banker”?

These are Santander staff members who will be stationed in local libraries, community centers, or Banking Hubs after a branch closes. They can help with:

  • Setting up online or mobile banking.
  • General account enquiries.
  • Fraud and scam awareness.
  • Note: They generally cannot handle physical cash; you will still need a Post Office or ATM for that.

What if I am a “vulnerable” customer?

Santander has stated they will proactively contact customers who regularly use the closing branches and may need extra support (such as those with disabilities or those who do not use the internet). If you haven’t heard from them and are concerned, you can call their dedicated helpline at 0330 678 2469.

Business Banking

I have a business account. How do I deposit my daily takings?

Business customers can continue to deposit cash and cheques at the Post Office using their Santander business debit card or pre-printed deposit slips.

Can I still get change for my business?

Yes, you can apply for a Post Office Change Card, which allows you to get specific denominations of coins and notes at participating Post Office branches.

Quick Tip: If you want to find the exact location of your nearest alternative, I can look up the closest Post Office or Santander Work Café for you—just let me know your town!
