Record-Breaking Great White Shark “Contender” Resurfaces Off Canadian Coast

A massive great white shark, dubbed “Contender,” has made headlines after resurfacing off the coast of Canada. Measuring nearly 14 feet in length and weighing over 1,600 pounds, Contender is the largest male great white shark ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Shark’s Migration Pattern

According to tracking data from OCEARCH, a non-profit organization that researches large marine animals, Contender was first tagged in January off the Florida-Georgia coast. The shark has since traveled an impressive 1,400 kilometers to the Gulf of St. Lawrence off Newfoundland and Labrador, covering an average of 19 kilometers per day.

What Draws Contender to the Area?

Chris Fischer, founder of OCEARCH, believes that Contender’s movement into the Gulf of St. Lawrence is not unusual for this time of year. However, the specific location suggests that the shark may be drawn to the area’s abundant food supply, including harbor and gray seals, as well as school fish. The sea surface temperature in the area is around 50°F (10°C), which is suitable for great white sharks.

Great White Shark Migration Patterns

Researchers have found that great whites like Contender have a wide range of migration patterns, from the eastern Gulf of Mexico to the southern coast of Newfoundland. These sharks are known to migrate long distances in search of food and suitable habitats.

Tracking Contender

OCEARCH uses satellite tracking technology to monitor Contender’s movements. The shark’s last recorded location was on October 2, with a “Z-ping” signal indicating it spent a brief time at the surface. As Contender continues its migration, researchers will be tracking its movements to gain insights into the behavior and habits of great white sharks.

Conservation Efforts

OCEARCH’s tracking data can help inform conservation efforts and promote a better understanding of these apex predators. By studying the migration patterns and habits of great white sharks, researchers can work towards protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats.

Key Facts About Contender

  • Length: Nearly 14 feet (4 meters)
  • Weight: Over 1,600 pounds (726 kilograms)
  • Tracking: Satellite tracking technology used by OCEARCH
  • Migration: Travels between Florida and Atlantic Canada
  • Habitat: Coastal waters with abundant food supply

As researchers continue to track Contender’s movements, we can learn more about the behavior and habits of great white sharks and work towards protecting these incredible creatures and their habitats
