RWE and Thames Water Sign Landmark Green Energy PPA: A Net Zero Roadmap for 2030

December 20, 2025 | Industrial News & Sustainability Update

In a massive win for renewable energy infrastructure in the UK, RWE (the country’s largest power generator) has officially signed a five-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Thames Water.

This strategic partnership is set to transform how the UK’s largest water provider manages its electricity costs while accelerating its journey toward a net zero carbon footprint by 2030.

Powering London with Scottish Wind

Starting this month, RWE will supply 132 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually to Thames Water. This energy is sourced directly from the Camster Onshore Wind Farm in Caithness, Scotland.

With a generation capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) across 25 turbines, the Camster site is a cornerstone of the UK’s green energy transition. The deal will supply up to 15% of the energy required for Thames Water’s essential operations, ensuring that “keeping the taps flowing” in London and the Thames Valley is powered by sustainable energy.

Strategic Benefits of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

For large-scale utility providers, energy is one of the highest operational costs. This PPA serves as a critical financial planning tool:

  • Price Stability: By buying renewable energy at a fixed cost for five years, Thames Water protects itself from the volatility of the global natural gas and wholesale electricity markets.
  • Carbon Reduction: The agreement helps the company maintain its status of using 100% renewable electricity, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Operational Efficiency: The deal complements Thames Water’s own self-generated renewable energy, which currently covers over 25% of its needs.

“Water is the elixir of life,” says Olaf Lubenow of RWE. “We are delighted to support Thames Water in its important societal role by providing green electricity.”

Thames Water’s Net Zero 2030 Vision

Thames Water has already cut its emissions by almost 70% since 1990. Looking ahead, the company is focusing on:

  1. Energy Efficiency: Optimizing wastewater treatment processes to use less power.
  2. Solar Energy Expansion: Building on its floating solar panel arrays and rooftop installations.
  3. Sustainable Supply Chain: Working with partners like RWE to ensure every part of the utility cycle is eco-friendly.
