Watch Now: Gas Explosion Causes Partial Collapse at Bronx NYCHA Apartment Building
Bronx, New York (October 1, 2025) – A powerful gas explosion rocked a NYCHA high-rise apartment building in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx on Wednesday morning, causing part of the structure to collapse. Fortunately, officials confirm there are no reports of injuries at this time.
The incident happened just after 8 a.m. at the Mitchel Houses complex on Alexander Avenue. According to investigators, the explosion is believed to have originated in the building’s boiler system, which led to the chimney structure collapsing.
Emergency crews, including the FDNY and NYPD, quickly rushed to the scene. Two NYPD K-9 units were deployed to search the rubble for any possible victims. Authorities reported that the dogs found no indications of anyone trapped beneath the debris.
Eyewitnesses in the area described hearing a loud boom followed by smoke and dust billowing from the side of the building. Residents were briefly evacuated as a precaution while officials secured the site and inspected for further hazards.
“The good news is, so far, we don’t have any injuries reported,” officials said in a briefing. “We are continuing to investigate the cause and ensuring the building remains safe for residents.”
City inspectors are now working with NYCHA to determine the extent of the damage and assess whether nearby residents need to be relocated while repairs are underway.
This latest incident highlights ongoing concerns about aging infrastructure within NYCHA housing complexes, many of which have experienced maintenance and safety challenges in recent years.
As the investigation continues, residents and community leaders are calling for greater investment in safety upgrades to prevent future disasters.
For now, officials are urging calm, assuring residents that there is no immediate danger to the wider community.
